Car Safety Seats

Child Safety Seat Law in Oregon  Effective July 1st, 2007

 

The proper restraint of children reduces serious injuries and death in motor vehicle crashes. Car seats must be properly installed in the car. Children must be properly secured in the seat.

 

Infants: Must ride rear facing until they are both one year of age AND 20 pounds

 

Children 20 to 40 pounds AND over one year of age: Must be in forward-facing child safety seat. They may not be heavier than the seat is rated for.

 

Children over 40 pounds: Must be in a booster seat until they are 8 years of age OR 4’9” in height.

 

Children who are 8 years of age or older OR are taller than 4’9” in height: Must be properly secured in the safety belt system.

Any person having custody or control of a child under 10 years of age commits the crime of child neglect in the second degree (a Class A misdemeanor) if, with criminal negligence, the person leaves the child unattended any place for such a period of time as may be likely to endanger the health or welfare of such child. ORS 163.545 [1971 c.743 & 174; 1991 c.832 & 2]
